Markham tells Balk he his interested him beacuse it deals with personlaities. He asks what he thinks of Matthew Arnold. He discusses the way Carlyle and Drummond approch him. Markham continues o discuss his feeling about Arnold and refers to Wordsworth, Gray, and Kempis along with their writing.
